Chronische Schmerzen
Der Begriff Chronisches Schmerzsyndrom beschreibt einen Schmerz, der seine eigentliche Funktion als Warn- und Leithinweis verliert und einen selbständigen Krankheitswert erhält. Problematisch bei dieser Begriffsdefinition ist jedoch der nicht erwiesene Verlust der Warn- und Hinweisfunktion bei länger dauernden Schmerzen im Falle von Fehlbelastungen des Bewegungs- und Stützapparates.
Unter Berücksichtigung der zeitlichen Dimension ist davon auszugehen, dass ein chronisches Schmerzsyndrom entsteht, wenn Schmerzen länger als sechs Monate (heute eher: länger als 3 bis 6 Monate) bestehen. Alternativ wird chronischer Schmerz gelegentlich ohne konkreten Zeitrahmen definiert als Schmerz, der über die zu erwartende Zeitdauer zur Heilung anhält.
